Port Sunlight is one of the finest surviving industrial worker villages in the world. In 1888, William Lever bought a piece of marshland and began building a place to live for the workers at his Sunlight Soap factory. He employed over 30 architects to help create his vision. What set Port Sunlight apart was its radical emphasis on beauty, from its varied architecture to its picturesque landscapes.
The National Waterways Museum is set in an area with 19 Grade II listed buildings where you can walk outdoors around the locks, docks and warehouses, You can also visit the forge, stables, workers cottages and the main exhibition area in the Island Warehouse.
A free day to explore wonderful Chester. Take a walk around the city walls or stroll the beautiful streets with all it’s fascinating architecture. You could always have a boat trip along the river to see Chester from a different view.
Erddig House was built in 1683 to 1687 by the Cheshire mason Thomas Webb for Joshua Edisbury, High Sheriff of Denbighshire. Downstairs, a large collection of servants’ portraits and carefully preserved rooms capture life below stairs in the early 20th century, while upstairs is a treasure trove of fine furniture, textiles and wallpaper.
